Everyone hates the forced squircle jail for app icons on macOS, myself included. The obvious (and only) reason Apple did that was to make supporting system-wide dark/tinted/clear icons with specular highlights easier, more uniform. I am in the camp of who cares, give the Mac back its character. ๐Ÿ‘จ๐Ÿปโ€๐Ÿ’ป

Finally, an arena for tech bros where Section 230 doesnโ€™t completely shield them from accountability. The โ€œlegal actionโ€ damn well better require actual operational changes, otherwise what are we even doing here.

In all fairness, engineers at OpenAI have been doing a lot behind the scenes when it comes to parental controls and establishing more strict boundaries, likely because of this and other similar situations, but self-regulating is not the answer.

Last year the roof of an apartment building caught on fire after a stray piece of burning artillery shell landed on it. So this year my building manager has been on the roof spraying it with water throughout the day, praying that this eveningโ€™s rain happens as forecasted. ๐ŸŽ‡๐Ÿงจ

The internet today is filled with โ€œApple should just start their own fabโ€ to solve for the high market prices for RAM. Even if they decided to do so today, you would be waiting another 7-10 years until it would be online. It would also cost ~$150 billion a year during that time.

The company would then need external customers in order to make the economies of scale make sense. Sourcing the raw materials and manufacturing processes would also desecrate their carbon neutral by 2030 environmental goal.

Short answer, itโ€™s never going to happen. I was shocked they held off price hikes for as long as they did, but they already had exorbitant RAM and storage prices which gave them additional runway. ๐Ÿ‘จ๐Ÿปโ€๐Ÿ’ป

Completely static, runs 100% locally client-side as an in-memory array. Private, with zero visitor search telemetry. Jekyll generates the search JSON file at build time.

Posts that match the search query are displayed instantly by updating the DOM using `insertAdjacentHTML ('beforeend', template)`.

I had put off adding search to my static Jekyll website for quite a long time, but leaving my dev day job means I have more time and mental bandwidth for personal projects.

One thing I definitely wanted to include was fuzzy search to allow for typo tolerance. A tiny helper function in my search.js that implements the Levenshtein Distance algorithm is how I decided to go about this.

Now onto prioritized weighting to score search results for relevancyโ€ฆ๐Ÿ‘จ๐Ÿปโ€๐Ÿ’ป

I had someone ask me how I get my linked list posts to display a stylized source link in the posts list of feed readers like Reeder. I donโ€™t do anything aside from using an `external_url` key in my JSON feed. This doesnโ€™t work for the RSS version because a feed item only gets a single primary destination tag.

You can hack RSS into supporting linked list posts like John Gruber of Daring Fireball does by putting the external URL in the <link> block and then place your permalink in a <guid isPermaLink="false"> container. JSON is much faster, or you can use Atom instead of RSS 2.0 which supports multiple โ <link>โ  tags.

My website has seen an explosion of inorganic traffic the last year coming from China and Singapore for the purpose of training AI models. At no point has either of those two countries ever been in the top 30, and now both are consistently ranking in the top five. 99% of that traffic is direct with no referral information, coming from Headless Chrome.

Another key metric that makes this obvious is traffic from mobile/tablet devices dropping from an average of 70% down to 40%, even while overall raw numbers for both continue to increase naturally as my audience has grown. This is not a complaint, just an interesting observation. Obviously I could block most of these, but my website isnโ€™t commercial so I just donโ€™t care.

When the AirPods Pro 3 were released last year there were numerous people (myself included) on Reddit and elsewhere commenting to say the magnetic closing lid didnโ€™t snap shut with the same satisfying force and sound. I had the opportunity to speak with an engineer on the Apple Hardware team today who worked on the new AirPods. According to them, the case design and layout of the magnets was changed to prevent fine metal particles from becoming bound to the plastic case and โ€œstainingโ€ it black. This was certainly an issue in my experience, and so far the new model doesnโ€™t have this problem.

The city has quickly devolved into pure chaos after the Knicks win. There are people hanging off of scaffolding, fights breaking out, police car windows being smashed, lampposts being climbed, trash cans on fire, and traffic across midtown is basically at a standstill from the crowds. There was even a group trying to jump onto a moving firetruck.

So many news sites inaccurately report on Apple in a vacuum. The tech sector as a whole is down 4-7% this week. You can attribute this to investors freeing up funds for the SpaceX IPO, and nothing to do with the company itself. If I had to guess I would make the same argument for why Bitcoin and Ethereum have taken a nose dive the last two weeks.
